It’s no secret that people have been throwing around that eight-letter D-word to describe Donald Trump for quite some time now.
From announcing he’d be reviewing Smithsonian exhibitions so they align with his interpretation of history, to deploying the National Guard across US cities, firing or attempting to fire officials who oppose him, and even raising the idea of an unconstitutional third term, many have argued he has pushed the limits of presidential power.
And on Monday, Trump officially acknowledged the comparison at the Oval Office. After criticizing the reaction to his ongoing threats to deploy troops in US cities, he told reporters in a now-viral clip, “They say, ‘We don’t need him! Freedom, freedom! He’s a dictator! He’s a dictator!'” Then, he suggested, “A lot of people are saying maybe we’d like a dictator.”

As for himself, he clarified, “I don’t like a dictator. I’m not a dictator. I’m a man with great common sense, and I’m a smart person.”
Still, that didn’t stop people from sharing their thoughts on his reference. And now, for the second day in a row, Trump appears to be doubling down on the dictator talk.
In a clip from Tuesday, Trump is seen speaking with reporters at a cabinet meeting. At the beginning of the clip, he argued, without evidence, that Maryland Governor Wes Moore told him behind closed doors he was doing a “great job,” but claims Moore then tells the public he’s a dictator.
From there, Trump said, “So the line is that I’m a dictator, but I stop crime.” Then, he suggested that maybe that’s not so bad. “So a lot of people say, you know, ‘If that’s the case, I’d rather have a dictator.'”
Still, Trump insisted, for another time, that that’s not him. “I’m not a dictator. I just know how to stop crime.”

Despite his denials, many remain skeptical, arguing that this is his way of normalizing the idea, particularly after repeating it two days in a row. “This is the second day in a row he’s said this. This is an intentional normalization effort,” one wrote.
“They’re seeding the ground for dictatorship. For ever clearly, very openly,” another person believes.
“Trump just said the quiet part out loud: he wants to be a dictator. America needs to wake up,” wrote California Rep. Jimmy Gomez.
“Actually, Mr. Trump, ‘a lot of people’ say that millions of Americans fought and died to DEFEAT dictators. Ask anybody. We’d rather be a free country,” Bernie Sanders replied.

“Trump isn’t hiding it anymore. He’s pitching dictatorship as a deal. ‘Give up democracy, I’ll stop crime.’ That’s not law and order — that’s tyranny in plain sight,” another claimed.
And lastly, someone asked, “Do you feel like a frog in a pot of boiling water yet?”
