PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A video of a blue Kia driver appearing to “intentionally” sideswipe a motorcyclist early Monday morning led to an outpouring of tips from the public and an arrest Monday evening, according to Beaverton police.

The hit-and-run happened around 6:15 a.m. on Hwy 26 between Hwy 217 and Cedar Hills Boulevard. The Kia driver then sped off down the highway, as seen on dashcam footage, and police kicked off a public search.

Authorities have identified the driver as Samir Helio Pazzoto-Filho. Court records show he faces charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.

The motorcyclist, a young man in his 20s, slid 250 feet on his stomach — his clothing shredded by the road. The gear shifter pierced his steel-toe boot and his helmet split from the impact of the crash.

“There’s no steel toe left,” said his mother, Patsy, who asked to not use her last name. “There is a crack through it but the helmet saved his life.”

But the video only tells part of the story. Patsy said the driver tried to run her son off the road several times as he rode to work before the motorcycle and Kia came into view of the dashcam.

She added that her son had flipped off the Kia driver immediately before being slammed into and pushed off the road.

“The fact that somebody deliberately turned into my son and rammed him off the road is what makes me sick to my stomach,” Patsy told KOIN 6 News. “His actions could’ve killed my son.”

Officials say there may be other victims tied to Pazzoto-Filho.

“It is important to note that his vehicle had Florida license plates,” according to PPB. “If anyone else saw him driving recklessly during this incident or any other, we want to know about it.”
