Southwest Airlines Announces ‘Unprecedented’ Change Amid Free Bag Outrage

Apr 19, 2025 | Uncategorized

Southwest Airlines has made a series of big changes that are not limited to getting rid of free checked bags for all customers, a move that proved controversial.

Although that policy change sparked the biggest furor, the airline has been quietly making a series of other major moves, with the biggest set to unfold in late April 2025.

Southwest Airlines “is evolving rapidly, implementing new initiatives that support business objectives and create choice for current and future Customers of America’s largest domestic carrier,” the airline wrote in a news release.

In February 2025, the airline announced a “workforce reduction of approximately 1,750 employee roles is focused almost entirely on corporate overhead and leadership positions and represents approximately 15% of corporate positions, including senior leadership and directors.”

According to Newsweek, the mass layoff is expected to take place on April 22, 2025.

“This decision is unprecedented in our 53-year history, and change requires that we make difficult decisions. We are at a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines into a leaner, faster, and more agile organization,” said Bob Jordan, President, Chief Executive Officer & Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, in the news release.

“I arrived at this decision thoughtfully and carefully, knowing how hard it will be to say goodbye to colleagues who have been a significant part of our Southwest Culture and accomplishments. I’m grateful to all Southwest Employees who have shared in our legendary history and to those that will guide us into the next era of Southwest Airlines.”

Among other recent changes, the airline wrote that it adjusted the number of “Rapid Rewards” points that customers can earn; widened its “distribution channels”; and changed how flight credits are handled.

In addition, according to a Southwest press release, “The carrier will also begin daily nonstop flights the same day between San Diego and Fresno, CA, and increase service between San Diego and Tampa, FL, to Thursdays through Mondays from once a week on Saturdays.”

That’s in addition to other route expansions, which started in March, according to the release.
