A police officer is critically injured from a crash while providing security for Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade in Maryville, Tennessee, officials said.

Maryville police officer Justin Brown and a state trooper were involved in the Friday night incident “during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies,” Maryville officials said.

The Maryville Police Department said citizens stayed at the scene and “immediately administered urgent first aid.”

“To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” Maryville police chief Tony Crisp said in a statement on Saturday.

Brown was taken to a hospital in critical condition and he underwent surgery on Saturday morning, Maryville police said.

An ambulance that was part of the motorcade also stopped and gave him immediate medical attention, according to Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications with the Tennessee Department of Safety.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that the motorcade included Vance.

“The U.S. Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic incident involving local law enforcement personnel that occurred this evening in Maryville, Tennessee, while they were supporting a protective motorcade movement,” Katherine Pierce, a resident agent in charge with the Knoxville office, said in a separate statement.

She said the “protectees were not impacted by this incident” and added, “Our thoughts are with those officers, their families and their agencies.”
