ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — South Carolina Gamecocks football legend and former Panthers linebacker Jadeveon Clowney was arrested in his hometown last week.

The 32-year-old Rock Hill native was charged with trespassing and failure to identify after officers accused him of illegally parking at an apartment complex. Officers say the alleged offense took place Sept. 12 at the Dunbar Place Apartments across the street from the Rock Hill School District’s football stadium on Constitution Boulevard.

Police records indicate a Rock Hill officer was already present to prevent non-apartment residents from parking there, since the complex manager had told police the issue became worse during games.

The complex has agent agreement signs, which state, “No Trespassing,” and there is an additional sign that states unauthorized vehicles will be towed from the parking lot.

The reporting officer was directed to tell drivers parking for the game to do so at the nearby Winthrop University campus.

Documents state that while the officer was directing the incoming traffic, a black Cadillac Escalade nearly passed him while entering the parking lot. The driver, later identified as Clowney, indicated that he was probably going to the football game. His alma mater, South Pointe, was playing crosstown rival Northwestern that night.

Clowney then reportedly said that it did not matter anyway if he was going to the football game because his aunt lived at the complex. The officer advised Clowney that if he did not live in the complex, he could not park there that night. Clowney then began shaking his head and again stated that he was going to see his aunt while pointing towards the back of the parking lot.

Both of the trespassing warning signs were located directly on the front passenger side of Clowney’s vehicle.

After refusing to park in the Winthrop, instead, Clowney allegedly became argumentative, leading to the reporting officer issuing a trespass warning to him as the officer determined Clowney’s intent to trespass on the property.

Documents state another officer was called to assist, at which time Clowney was said to be “highly argumentative, boisterous, and talked loudly” over the reporting officer. He reportedly told officers at least twice that he was trying to leave, but instead, he continued to argue, talk over the reporting officer, and display “a defiant attitude.”

The reporting officer requested Clowney’s identification at least twice during the incident, which he claims Clowney repeatedly refused to provide. The officer then advised Clowney that he was under arrest for trespassing and failure to ID.

Clowney, who signed this week with the Cowboys, was transported to jail, where he was charged with the stated offenses.

Clowney was the No. 1 overall pick for the Texans in 2014 and played for South Carolina between 2011-13, where he recorded 24 career sacks. His most famous play came during the 2013 Outback Bowl, when he tackled a Michigan running back behind the line of scrimmage, forcing his helmet to pop off and fumble the ball.

The Panthers brought Clowney home last year, where he had nine tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He was a free agent until signing a one-year deal with Dallas just days after the arrest.
