TIME Cover After Charlie Kirk Assassination: ‘Enough,’ ‘Political Violence Haunting America’

Sep 11, 2025 | U.S.

The cover steeped in red featured a photo of Charlie Kirk speaking under the tent at Utah Valley University on Wednesday moments before the shots rang out that would end his life at the age of 31.

The article by Eric Cortellessa said political violence in America has become a plague, from the attempted assassination on President Trump to the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson to now Charlie Kirk.

In 2021, the year Trump supporters attaacked the U.S. Capitol, there were more than 9,600 recorded threats against members of Congress, according to the Capitol Police. The following year saw a hammer-wielding assailant attack Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul in their San Francisco home and the attempted stabbing of New York gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin at a campaign rally. In 2024, Trump himself faced two attempts on his life, including the history-bending afternoon in Butler, Pa., when he turned his head at the instant an assassin fired, the bullet grazing his ear instead of piercing his skull.

This year the threat grew more insistent. The residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, was set on fire by an arsonist; a gunman shot two Democratic Minnesota legislators and their spousestwo Israeli embassy staffers were shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.; a man shouting “free Palestine” tossed Molotov cocktails at a pro-Israeli demonstration in Boulder, Co., injuring multiple people and killing one; and a gunman who allegedly held anti-vaccine views opened fire at CDC headquarters in Atlanta.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was gunned down while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He is survived by his wife and two children. President Trump honored him upon learning of his death.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Democrat leaders have roundly condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk as senseless political violence.

“Let me be clear: even if you disagree with someone’s beliefs, even if you stand against every single thing they stand for, the path of disagreement must never lead to what happened today at Utah Valley University,” said Democrat National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin.

“Political violence — in all of its forms — is unacceptable in America. Yet, as I said when my dear friends Melissa and Mark Hortman were murdered earlier this summer, such violence has become commonplace. Every single political leader, Democrat and Republican alike, must loudly condemn this violence. We must work harder to bring this country together, not divide it,” he added.
