After a months-long winnerless streak, two tickets purchased in Missouri and Texas won the second-highest Powerball jackpot ever.
“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winners and the Missouri Lottery and Texas Lottery for selling the winning tickets,” Matt Strawn, the Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, said in a statement. “Each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run gave players a chance at the prize, while also supporting vital public programs and services in their communities — and that’s worth celebrating!”
The winners beat all the odds and were more likely to be eaten by a shark or struck by lightning than win the Powerball jackpot that was worth $1.787 billion during the Saturday, Sept. 6, Powerball drawing.
Here’s what we know about the winners, who have not yet been identified.
Where were the winning Powerball tickets sold?
One of the jackpot-winning tickets was purchased in Fredericksburg, Texas, located around 78 miles west of Austin, according to the Texas Lottery.
The Missouri Lottery has not announced where the other winning ticket was purchased in the state.
“The selling location of Missouri’s jackpot-winning ticket will be announced within 72 hours of the drawing, in accordance with Missouri Lottery procedure,” the state lottery said in a Sept. 7 press release.
Both winners will split the $1.787 billion jackpot.
How much money do the Powerball jackpot winners get?
Each of the jackpot winners can choose between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million, according to Powerball.
Were there any other Powerball lottery winners?
Aside from the lucky jackpot winners, an additional 9.9 million tickets won prizes during the Saturday, Sept. 6 Powerball drawing, including 18 tickets that matched every white ball and won the Match 5 $1 million prize and two more that won the Match 5 + Power Play $2 million prize.
What were the winning numbers?
The winning numbers for the drawing were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and the red Powerball was 17. The Power Play was 2X.
When is the next Powerball drawing?
The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8, at 11 p.m. ET and will be livestreamed on Powerball.com or YouTube.
