WESTBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) — Two people are dead after separate crashes shut down Interstate 95 in Westbrook on Friday, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said a flatbed tractor-trailer carrying plywood was traveling northbound around 7:45 a.m. when plywood flew all over both sides of the interstate. This caused a chain reaction between four other vehicles, resulting in them hitting the metal beam guardrail on the right shoulder and the concrete barrier in the median.

Nicholas John Kupec, a 39-year-old from Waterford, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to state police. Three other drivers were taken to Middlesex Health Shoreline Medical Center for minor injuries.

Less than two hours later, at around 9:30 a.m., a second crash, involving a tractor-trailer and a car, occurred near Exit 65 in front of the Troop F State Police barracks on the southbound side.

State police said Isabella Rose Butzgy, a 22-year-old from Oakdale, rear-ended another vehicle. She was pronounced dead, according to state police. The other driver suffered minor injuries.

Any witnesses to these crashes are asked to call Troop F at 860-399-2100.

Interstate 95 North, between exits 64 and 65, and Interstate 95 South, between exits 66 and 64, were closed for nearly eight hours. The Route 145 overpass (Horse Hill Road) remains closed between Pequot Park Road and Old Clinton Road due to structural damage.
