Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel defended President Donald Trump amid new questions about his health with some over-the-top praise.
“President Trump doesn’t use a teleprompter. He talks just clearly,” he said on Tuesday. “You’re sitting there mesmerized as he talks.” Siegel compared Trump to former President Joe Biden. “We had a guy doing, we called them gaffes, but he didn’t know where he was,” Siegel said, later adding that Biden is “demented.”
Siegel in 2020 predicted that the “worst, worst-case scenario” for COVID-19 was that “it could be the flu.” Later that same year, he declared Trump to be “very cognitively advanced” after the president’s infamous “person, woman, man, camera, TV” interview.
His latest defense of Trump had at least one problem: The president does in fact use a teleprompter frequently, although he’s known to wander off-script and into rambling asides about sharks, windmills, Hannibal Lecter, and more.
Trump claims his speaking style is what he calls “the weave.” “I’ll talk about like nine different things, and they all come back brilliantly together,” Trump said last year. He claimed English professors have told him that his weave is “the most brilliant thing I’ve ever seen.”
Critics, however, say the president just rambles and frequently simply loses his train of thought. Longtime Trump observers say he’s gotten worse in recent years. “He is degrading,” Tim O’Brien, author of the 2005 book TrumpNation: The Art of Being The Donald, told MSNBC last year. “His speech is slurring, his mind is slower, he is tired at the end of the day.”
Trump, in recent weeks, has faced new scrutiny over his health. He has had bruising on his hands, which the White House has said is from aspirin use and frequent handshaking, and swelling in his feet and ankles due to chronic venous insufficiency.
However, critics say the whole picture is unclear, and ex-Politico Magazine editor Garrett Graff over the weekend called on journalists to press the White House on six specific questions about the president’s health. But Siegel defended Trump ― and critics on X called him out for it:
