During his opening monologue on Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher denounced people comparing President Donald Trump to Hitler by stating that “calling somebody Hitler makes it a lot easier to justify things like assassinations.” Maher also remarked that Trump doesn’t have much room to criticize anyone for demonizing their opponents, given his own rhetoric.
Maher said, “[Y]esterday, the President weighed in on [the assassination of Charlie Kirk]. He said violence and murder are tragic consequences of demonizing those you disagree with day after day, year after year, and that goes double for dogs, fat pigs, and terrible persons. And, today, they asked the President, what are you going to do to bring the country together, and he said, I know this is going to get me in trouble, but I could care less. He’s a different kind of cat. I’ll tell you, his message is, let the healing stop.”
Maher continued, “[H]e had a rough week, and this shit has to stop too. He went out to dinner — I wouldn’t have done that — in Washington, D.C., okay, and people started to gather around him, and they were chanting, you’re the Hitler of our time. Okay, first of all, assholes, he’s not Hitler, okay, an insult to everybody in the Holocaust to begin with. Second of all, calling somebody Hitler makes it a lot easier to justify things like assassinations. Let’s put a shitload of that away, shall we?”
Later in the show, Maher stated that the motive for the Kirk assassination isn’t known yet.
