EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Max Grossman, the leading voice of opposition against a Downtown arena, has been arrested, according to jail records obtained by KTSM.
City moves ahead with plans to sell Duranguito properties
According to jail records, Grossman was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on Friday, Sept. 5 on the charge of assault causing bodily injury/family violence. His arrest stemmed from an alleged offense that took place on Aug. 27.
According to jail records, he was released after posting a $2,500 surety bond.
Grossman’s attorney, Brian Kennedy, sent KTSM the following statement:
“This ridiculous charge is absolutely unfounded. Our concern is whether it is an action taken to pressure Mr. Grossman in a child custody issue. We intend to completely clear his name.”
Grossman is currently an associate professor of art history at UTEP. We have reached out to UTEP for comment.
Grossman, the father of a 1-year-old girl, filed a petition in El Paso County court on Friday, Sept. 5, requesting joint custody with the child’s mother, Gabriela Marcelo. According to the court filing, Grossman is seeking exclusive rights to designate the child’s primary residence in El Paso County and to make key decisions, including school enrollment.
Court documents showed Grossman is also requests temporary orders to prevent the mother from traveling internationally with the child, withdrawing her from school, or engaging in behaviors that may harm the child’s well-being. As of Friday, the case is expected to be reviewed by the court to determine the final custody arrangements and protections for the child.
For years, Grossman led opposition against a Downtown arena being built in the Duranguito neighborhood.
The arena project was originally approved by City voters as part of a Quality of Life bond in 2012. But after years of opposition led by Grossman and others, the project was scrapped.
In November 2024, City voters officially revoked the bond measure that had initially authorized the project.
In February of this year, the El Paso City Council voted to move ahead to sell its Duranguito properties that were originally slated for the arena project.
