Retailers across the nation have taken cost-cutting measures to rescue their business, and for some, it has resulted in store closures.
A number of these stores are slated to close locations in September, including At Home, Kroger and Claire’s.
Near the end of August, Kroger announced that it was laying off around 1,000 corporate associates in addition closing some of its stores.
These closures are meant to help reinvest the savings into other areas, including lowering prices, opening new locations and creating store-level jobs, according to a company memo.
The major grocery store chain’s website says that it operates in 16 states and has a total of 1,239 locations, the bulk of which are located in Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio.
According to the United Food & Commercial Workers union, two Kroger stores will close on Sept. 19.
The stores are located at 466 South Cummings Street in Abingdon, Virginia and 1664 East Stone Drive in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The home goods chain, At Home, also plans on shutting down some of its brick-and-mortar stores in September.
The business cited long-standing impacts of COVID-19, inflation and new tariff policies as the reasoning behind its struggles.
This move is meant to help with financial restructuring after filing for bankruptcy on June 16 as it struggles with $2 billion in debt.
According to court documents, At Home operates 260 stores in 40 states across the country.
