Tropical Storm Juliette to bring rain and bigger surf to San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — After several days of monsoonal thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts, the entire region is expected to get doused with some showers from a different system — this time, a tropical storm.

As of 2 p.m., Tropical Storm Juliette was about 650 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California and staying out over open waters.

While not expected to make landfall, the outer clouds and moisture are expected to push into Southern California overnight into much of Thursday.

The storm is expected to take a slight turn to the north, slow down and weaken into Thursday, but its presence will boost upper-level moisture in northwest Mexico and southwest U.S. This means more humid conditions and the potential to enhance monsoonal rainfall later this week.

High clouds from this system are already moving into the region and will thicken overnight to produce mostly overcast conditions Thursday. The influx of moisture brings rain chances across the region starting as early as midnight in southern portions of the county and then becoming more widespread in the early morning hours of Thursday.

There could be some pockets of heavier rainfall throughout the morning with scattered showers lingering into the tomorrow afternoon.

Rainfall totals will range from a tenth inch of rain to close to a third inch for some coastal and valley locations. Mountains could get up to half an inch of rain with this tropical system, all which should be beneficial for August!

For Friday and into the holiday weekend, conditions are expected to remain warm but drier.

Coastal areas will get afternoon temperatures this weekend in the upper 70s to low 80s, low 90s for the valleys and mountains and around 105 degrees for the deserts. Thursday will be a bit cooler because of the cloud cover on the way.
