San Diego County faces extreme heat; temps to reach 114 degrees

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It’s going to feel like summer again in San Diego as the recent cooling trend turns hot later in the week.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for San Diego County mountain and desert areas from 10 a.m. Thursday to 8 p.m. Friday.

San Diego temperatures to rise, with thunderstorms possible

Across San Diego County, temperatures on Thursday are forecast to reach highs up to 91 in Escondido, El Cajon and Julian, and up to 95 degrees in Ramona. The San Diego coastline will remain moderate with high temperatures of 78 degrees in Oceanside and in the City of San Diego.

Extreme Heat Watch

Under the extreme heat watch that will be in place from Thursday morning into Friday night, high temperatures are expected to reach 100 to 114 in San Diego County and Southern California deserts and 90 to 99 degrees in the mountains.

Extreme Heat Warning

An extreme heat warning has been issued from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Friday for portions of southwest Arizona and parts of southeast and Southern California like Imperial County, Ocotillo, Joshua Tree and more.

Overexposure of extreme heat can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke, so the National Weather Service advises to wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing, to avoid strenuous exercise during the heat of the day and to keep an eye out for signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion.

Chances of Rain

Also, as monsoonal moisture makes its way in from the southeast, there is a chance for thunderstorms from Thursday through Sunday in the mountains and deserts.

However, the National Weather Service reports the humidity from the monsoons will limit nighttime cooling, so it will remain in the upper 80s and low 90s in the deserts at night.

In extreme temperatures, it is advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles as the inside of the car will reach temperatures that can kill within minutes.

Air Quality

The air quality across much of San Diego County, Southern California and Baja California was moderate (yellow) on Monday due to wildfires burning across the region.
